Sample Bookkeeper Resume

Job Overview

A bookkeeper keeps track of financial records for organizations and companies. For the sake of keeping updated and accurate financial statements, bookkeepers must understand how to use spreadsheets and software programs for data. The financial statements a bookkeeper is responsible for usually include debts, expenditures, invoices, profits, and accounts payable and receivable. They are expected to perform any combination of calculating, posting, and verifying financial data for use in maintaining records. The bookkeeper is responsible for ensuring that all transactions are recorded in the correct daybook, which contains records of sales, purchases, payments, and receipts.

Job Education/Qualifications

Becoming a bookkeeper requires at least a high school diploma. Then one should have certification to demonstration their knowledge and skills in the field. To obtain certification, a candidate must have 2 years of experience, best gained by on-the-job training. A candidate should have math and basic computer skills, while also being detail-oriented. Certification is acquired through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, and is known as the Certified Bookkeeper (CB) designation. The organization’s code of ethics must be followed, along with the passing of an examination. The exam is broken up into four parts. Preparation courses are available online and at colleges for the certification exam.

Job Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks is expected to decline 8 percent from 2014 to 2024. This decline can be attributed to technological change, which is expected to reduce demand for the workers in these occupations. Software improvements have automated many of the tasks typically performed by bookkeepers. As a result, there will be more bookkeepers being hired on a contract basis through third party firms, rather than being held as a staff member. Opportunities to enter the occupation will still be plentiful, and the demand for bookkeeping is tied especially to the growth of small businesses.

Job Earnings

The median annual salary for a bookkeeper is $39,560, as of September 2016. The salary range is usually between $34,833-$44,349. This can vary widely depending on a variety of factors. Many bookkeepers work full time, and about 1 in 4 work part-time. Bookkeepers may work longer hours during certain times of year to meet deadlines, such as tax time, the end of the fiscal year, or when yearly accounting audits are performed. Those who work in restaurants, stores, and hotels may find themselves working extra hours during peak vacation and holiday seasons.
